As many as 671 personnel have been awarded police medals on teh occcasion of Republic day this year. The President's Police Medals for gallantry have been awarded to 15 personnel, of which as many as 12 are from Maharashtra and 3 are from the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
The President's Police Medals for distinguished services were awarded to 71 personnel.
Other medals awarded on the occasion were: Police Medals for Gallantry to 107 personnel and Police Medals for Meritorious Service to 478 personnel.

Anti-terrorist squad chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte, Inspector Vijay Salaskar and Assistant Sub Inspector Tukaram Omble, who laid down their lives fighting terrorists in the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, are among 11 security personnel to have been honoured with the Ashok Chakra, the country's highest peace-time gallantry award.
Other recipients of this award include National Security Guard commandos Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Havildar Gajender Singh,
