The Central Electricity Authority today said that it expects a 75,000 to 1,00,000 MW power generation capacity addition in the 12th five year plan.
"The capacity addition in the 12th plan (2012-17) is expected to be 75,000 to 1,00,000 MW and majority of the addition would be from coal-based plants," Central Electricity Authority (CEA) Chairperson Gurdial Singh said at workshop on energy efficiency here.
Good economic growth would not be possible without increasing energy resources, added Singh.
The Power Ministry expects capacity addition in the current five-year plan ending March 31, 2012, is expected to be around 51,000 MW. This would be less than the revised target of 62,000 MW.
So far, in the 2007-12 plan period, a capacity addition of 34,462 MW has been achieved.
In the current fiscal, the Ministry anticipates to add a capacity of 17,196 MW, the highest for any financial year in the 11th plan.

According to Singh, the losses during power transmission and distribution are projected to come down to about 15 per cent during the 12th five year plan. At present, the losses are estimated at 28-29%.
The two-day workshop on energy efficiency is organised by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Energy (ATSE).
