In a bid to equip Ahmedabad civil hospital with modern facilities, Gujarat government has embarked on a project to provide a major facelift to Asia’s largest civil hospital. The government has provisioned Rs. 911.68 crore for revamp and modernisation of Ahmedabad civil hospital.
Gujarat government hopes to complete the project by the year 2010 and it will implemented in a phased manner. “At present, Ahmedabad civil hospital has a capacity of 2,150 beds, which will be increased to 5,150 post expansion,” Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi told reporters on new year gathering at his residence in Gandhinagar.
As part of the modernisation, the civil hospital will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, moder OPD, additional ‘Trauma Center’ and multi as well as super speciality healthcare services. In addition to this, a new medical college will also come up.
In the first phase of expansion, all the blocks of the hospital, BJ Medical College, Dental college will be modernised. Also, new trauma center will be launched along with upgradation of basic infrastructure. The state government plans to pump in Rs. 235 crore for the first phase expansion.
The second phase will see setting up of new civil hospital complex and other required facilities and infrastructure at a cost of Rs. 325 crore. “Gujarat has seen rapid economic development in past seven years. Considering the industrial growth, the state government intends to raise Human Development Index (HDI) of the state by providing modern medical and healthcare services in the state,” he added.
Gujarat government also wants all the government hospitals to meet NABH as well as NABL standards. “We have set the ball rolling for the purpose,” he said.
