From working as a trainee with the Anand-based National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1970, earning a stipend of Rs 400 per month, to the director of Unnati Unlimited, a proprietorship firm with a turnover of Rs 55 lakh as on March 31 this year, Shyam Taneja has seen it all. |
Taneja joined NDDB in 1970 and left in 1985 when he was a senior project engineer. He then joined Hindpack, a subsidiary of NDDB, as factory manager, and was promoted general manager soon. After working for Hindpack for seven years, Taneja left Hindpack as the managing director. |

During 1994-1997, Taneja worked as a director at Vadilal Chemicals. |
But he always wanted to do something of his own and formed Unnati Unlimited in 1997 in association with the Leadership Management Institute of the US. |
In the very first year of operation, Unnati reported a turnover of Rs 1.2 lakh. |
"We are growing at 50 per cent every year and have touched a turnover of Rs 55 lakh. We are expecting to touch Rs 1 crore in the next two years," said Taneja. |
"Our aim is to touch lives and change them. We help organisations and individuals to grow by setting up goals and helping them achieve it. In everyday life people lose sight of their mission and get distracted. We help rectify that," said Taneja. |
He wants to set up an institute for personality development in the near future. Taneja, 58, is married to Ajit, who runs a business of manufacturing and selling soft toys, apart from being a housewife. |
Taneja has two daughters, Neeru and Sama, both MBAs and married. Neeru works in GE as an HRD manager, while Sama looks after Unnati Institute of Motive, a sister concern of Unnati Unlimited, which looks after personality development of children in the age group of 10-20 years. |
Taneja loves music and he has converted his profession as his hobby. He attributes his success to his family, parents and late Guru Gangagiri. |
"It costs between Rs 4,000 to Rs 60,000 to change a life, depending upon the required modules for individuals. However, fee is the secondary issue, and after transformation, an individual willingly pays us the fee. Our mission is to create more Dhirubhais from Ahmedabad," said Taneja. |
