Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami today said here the Election Commission will initiate appropriate action against Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa for violating the model code of conduct. The chief minister had addressed a public function after 10 pm in Hubli on Monday, which was in violation of the EC regulations.
Addressing a press conference here after reviewing the poll preparations with government officials, director general of police and political parties for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka being held on April 23, he said, “It has been proved prima facie that the chief minister has made a public speech after 10 pm at Hubli on Monday. Suitable action will be initiated against him by the court of law.”
He said various political parties have filed complaints with the election commission and action is being taken wherever necessary.
The political parties had complained that the electoral rolls were still being revised in the state and names of lots of bogus voters were included in the electoral rolls, especially in Bellary.
They also complained of delay in obtaining permission from magistrate for holding public meetings and involvement of multiple agencies to secure the permission. Reacting to their complaints, the chief election commissioner said the commission will simplify the procedure to secure permission to hold public rallies by political parties. He also warned of strict action against those who incite communal violence through their speeches.
He said the direction has been issued to the state government not to allow presidents appointed after March 2 to various boards and commissions in the state from taking charge.
On complaints regarding diversion of World Bank funds for drinking water projects by the state government, Gopalaswami said the Election Commission will look into the matter. He said till today, the EC has seized liquor worth Rs 77 lakh and vehicles used to transport at various places in the state.
