Afghanistan, Icrisat To Strengthen Collaboration

The strife-torn Afghanistan, in an effort to rebuild its agricultural system that has been ravaged by over two decades of war, is looking towards Internationl Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) for intensified collaboration.

As part of an international consortium, Icrisat has been actively invloved with the restoration of the genetic material and re-establishing the agricultural research network in Afghan in the last 18 months.

In continution of the efforts, the Afghan first deputy minister of agriculture, Mohammed Sharif, today visited the Patancheu campus (located on the outskirts of the city).

The minister will be visiting the gene bank at Icrisat, which contains germplasm of crops that Afghanistan lost during the past two decades.

Sharif told the media that a few collaborative agreements were likely to be signed with Icrisat during his visit.

He said that Afghanistan was expecting Indian co-operation in the areas of developing agricultural co-operatives, mechanisation, training and livestock management.
