The resignation of Advocate General B V Acharya is part of a bigger plot by the constituents of the NDA and Jayalalithaa, said Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily. He also said that with this game, the BJP high command had intended to secure the support of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a CII event, Moily said, “The resignation of the advocate general is part of a give and take deal between the BJP high command and Jayalalithaa. The BJP high command wanted Acharya to give up his post of Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) and dilute the case to secure Jayalalithaa’s support.” B V Acharya, who was AG, was also the SPP in the disproportionate assets case against Jayalalithaa, which is heard by the special bench in Bangalore. He was forced to resign as Advocate General following pressure from the state government.
He also alleged, “The government’s plan to support Jayalalithaa is so open and shameless. I understand that the AG was suffocating from the government’s plans and pressures, and was forced to resign.”
Complimenting the decision, Moily said, “Acharya has upheld the integrity of the profession. Any other opportunistic lawyer would have chosen to keep the AG’s position which gives more power, and more remuneration.”
Former Karnataka Chief Minister also said that when Acharya was appointed as the AG, they were aware that he was the special public prosecutor (SPP) and was handling the case.
To a separate question on the appointment of Lokayukta, Moily said, “The state government and the BJP are not interested in curbing corruption. The BJP sabotaged the Lok Pal Bill in Parliament, they have not had a Lokayukta in Gujarat for the last nine years.
“I am not talking about the issue of Bannurmath. But there are many other retired high court judges and Supreme Court judges from Karnataka who can be contenders for the Lokayukta post,” he added.
