Ahmedabad may soon have a circular railway. The Railway Board is in talks with Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) for developing the circular railway track around Ahmedabad city to decongest the increasing road traffic. |
"Ahmedabd will soon have a circular railway. We are in talks with AUDA for the detailed project and development of the railway track in the city. The circular railway is necessary for Ahmedabad because of the increasing road traffic," Naranbhai Rathwa, Union Minister of State of Railway told Business Standard on Wednesday. |

He was in Ahmedabad to flag off the Rajdhani Express. With effect from September 8, the services of Rajdhani Express has been doubled to six days a week. |

"The cost of the project is estimated to be over Rs 145 crore. The work is expected to commence by the end of the current year and expected to be over in the next two year," said a senior official of Western Railway. |

Apart from the Rs 145 crore circular railway project, Western Railway is planning to spend over Rs 100 crore for various expansion plan in Gujarat, which includes to diversion of railway traffic from Kalupur to Sabarmati and other railway stations, construction of infrastructure and other facilities at Samarmati railway station, Maninagar, and Gandhinagar railway station amongst others. |

Western Railway is also planning to connect the state capital Gandhinagar with New Delhi. |

"Work has already commenced in the Sabarmati section to decongest the Ahmedabad route. We are trying to develop Sabarmati station as one of the main railway stations which can share the load of Ahmedabad traffic at Kalupur railway station," said Lalit Mohan Sahore, divisional railway manager, Western Railway. |

At present, over 100 broad gauge and metre gauge trains serve Ahmedabd, with over 11,000 reserved and 31,000 unreserved passengers traveling daily, with approximate earnings of Rs 35 lakh and Rs 16 lakh respectively on a daily basis. |
