The Election Commission today said all members of a family should preferably go together to exercise their franchise in the next week's Maharashtra Assembly elections to prevent bogus voting by using ration cards.

"This is necessary because the ration cards in Maharashtra do not carry photos of the family members," Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla told a press conference here.

Chawla, who was accompanied by Election Commissioner V S Sampath, said a booth-level officer would identify the head of the family and its members when they come for voting.

"If bogus vote is attempted using ration card, an FIR will be filed," Chawla warned.

Chawla, who earlier held a meeting with district election duty officers, said sufficient number of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) were available in the state along with video cameras to ensure transparency during voting.

He said an intensive vigil would be undertaken 48 hours prior to voting to prevent illegal activities, including supply of liquor.
