Small scale industrial clusters in the state are expected to get a boost once the Development Commissionerate of Small Scale Industries(DC SSI) clears proposals worth Rs 6.35 crore sent by the state under the 'integrated technology upgradation and management programme' scheme.

The small scale sector, mainly the rural cottage industries, has substantially supplemented efforts to generate employment in rural areas and given a fillip to the rural economy of the state.

The DC SSI scheme applies to any cluster of industries where there is a commonality in the method of production, quality control and testing among others.

The industries department had sent detailed proposals for the modernisation of 13 small scale industrial clusters in the state to the DC SSI, a Government of India arm. The total cost of these projects is Rs 6.35 crore, out of which Rs 3.26 crore would be the one-time grant from the DCSSI.

The cluster units are expected to pitch in with about Rs 1 crore for the modernisation effort and the remaining financial requirements are slated to be met through borrowings. Sources in the industries department said that the clearance for the projects of the 13 industrial clusters is expected soon.

The proposals sent to the DC SSI for clearance include an imitation jewellery cluster at Machilipatnam with a total project cost of Rs 73.1 lakh).

Apart from this, two mango jelly clusters at Bhimili and Kakinada at a cost of Rs 35.91 lakh and Rs 35.56 lakh respectively are also included in the proposal. A burnt lime cluster in Piduguralla is also planned at a cost of Rs 74.9 lakh.

Apart from these four, the eight other clusters include " a turmeric processing cluster at Duggirala at a cost of Rs 72.68 lakh, a food processing cluster at Vijayawada at a cost of Rs 54.61 lakh, a graphite crucibles cluster in Rajahmundry at a cost of Rs 40.25 lakh, a precision components and machine tools cluster in Balanagar at an estimated cost of Rs 45.1 lakh, two plastic clusters in Adilabad and Nalgonda at a cost of Rs 44.97 lakh each, a readymade garments cluster in Rayadurg at a cost of Rs 79.9 lakh, an electronics cluster in Kushaiguda at a cost of Rs 33.45 lakh and finally a new lace cluster at Narsapur in West Godavari district at an estimated cost of Rs 35 lakh.

Quality and productivity play a very crucial role in the long term sustainability of small scale units. With export avenues also opening up, the quality aspect has become much more significant and it is expected that modernisation and upgradation of machines and skills can bring the desired change.

The above scheme is aimed at achieving these results with financial support in conducting diagnostic studies of the concerned cluster and so on.
