The draft tribal empowerment policy 2010-2015, prepared by the Andhra Pradesh government, envisages to double the income of every tribal household in the state over a period of five years through provision of assets that yield sustainable income.

The draft would be released by chief minister, K Rosaiah, at the regional conference on tribal welfare and empowerment to be held at Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

Among other things, the policy is aimed at addressing the issue of unemployment in educated tribal youth in a mission mode and provide job opportunities through skill upgradation to 100,000 tribals by 2015. The tribal population in the state is estimated at 6 million.

According to an official press release, the policy will endeavour to fill the gaps in the existing tribal development framework, strengthen the service delivery system, ameliorate the conditions responsible for the deprivation of those living in remote areas and address the emerging challenges confronting the tribal communities.

The policy states that a comprehensive plan for economic development of every household will be executed to address the issues of sustainable resource management, capacity development, extension and technology support , food processing, marketing and value addition to minor forest produce.
