A major fire today broke out at the iron ore receiving and conveying station of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. This is the third fire accident at the steel plant in the last eight days.
The fire caused damage to conveyor numbers 5, 6 and 7, including belt, junction boxes and other equipment. The accident occurred 20 metre below the ground where the conveyor belts run.
The unloading of raw material in ore and flux yard is likely to be affected for a few days to ensure safe operations. The repair works would take a few weeks, a VSP release said.
The plant has got adequate stock of iron ore for the next 20 days. The extent of damage is limited and has been contained, it said.
