The Andhra Pradesh government has allotted 1,200 acres of land near a special economic zone at Pudimaka village in Visakhapatnam district to NTPC Ltd for setting up a coal-based super thermal power station.

The state government issued a GO directing the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) to allot the land (denotified area) to the public sector power generator on a long lease basis of 33 years.

The coal-fired 4,000-Mw (5X800-Mw) super thermal power project entails an investment of around Rs 20,000 crore and NTPC had committed to complete the project by March, 2019, making it the biggest single location power plant in the state.

The government release noted NTPC chairman stating the identified land was the most suitable as it was close to the company's existing Simhadri power project and it could take advantage of the existing infra, including railway siding, workforce and housing facility.

“If the project is running successfully, at the end of the lease period, it can be extended further on mutual terms,” the order stated.
