Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today requested the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) on petroleum and natural gas to give priority allocation of gas for the power plants in Andhra Pradesh.

He spoke with Union Defence Minister A K Antony, who heads the EGoM, and the Union Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily in this regard, according to a press release. The EGoM is scheduled to meet tomorrow.

The chief minister said AP needed to be considered as a special case as it was the only state where power projects were constructed on the basis of firm allocation of natural gas. The gas linkage committee has originally allocated 12.97 mmscmd gas while EGoM allocated 6.82 mmscmd for long-term PPA projects and 2.34 mmscmd to merchant power plants totalling 9.16 mmscmd, according to the chief minister's office.

Most of the independent power producers had shut their plants as the gas supply from the KG Basin stopped from March this year.
