Faced with the worst drought conditions in three decades, the Andhra Pradesh government has asked for an assistance of Rs 2,160 crore from the central government. It also sought 25 lakh tonnes of rice to help ease the situation for the drought-hit people.
The central government commissioned a seven-member team of officials to visit Andhra Pradesh and submit a study on the extent of damage caused by drought. Accordingly, the team arrived in the city today on a three-day visit to drought-hit areas.
Headed by the joint secretary in the ministry of agriculture, P C Agarwal, the team held meetings with various state government officials as a preparatory exercise. The team is scheduled to visit the districts of Nalgonda and Medak tomorrow.
