Career opportunities in Canada for students of this region are steadily expanding.

The Canadian Institute for International Studies (CIIS) has entered into a contract with the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences in Canada to give degrees and diplomas for programmes in applied health sciences like those for radiologists and medical laboratory technicians.

Talking to Business Standard, Michener Institute Director (International) Joan Laurie said, "There is a dearth of around 3,000 professionals in areas related to applied health sciences. The contract will help in providing quality education to young students in India. Our institute is 47 years old and solely for applied health sciences."

The programmes provide degrees and diplomas to Indian science graduates at half the cost a student pays in Canada. For example, the tuition fees for doing any course in Canada are approximately Canadian $6,000, whereas the same course can be done in India at half the cost, besides low living costs.

Laurie said the remuneration after the completion of the course in Canada was at least Canadian $42,000 a year. Indian students have high skills but they are not very good in communicating, according to her. "Our experience shows that they are very good at reducing the skill gap," she said.

The institute has similar contracts with institutes in Singapore, Belgium, Trinidad and Tobago, the Netherlands, the UK, Jamaica, and Barbados.

"The contract will help in creating opportunities for Indian professionals of international acceptable standards. There are other courses like diagnostic cytology, magnetic resonance imaging, medical laboratory technology, radiological technology, and respiratory therapy, where there is a huge demand for professionally qualified people in Canada," says K S Mann, director of the CIIS.

"The programme will be conducted at the newly developed 30-acre campus, with an initial investment of around Rs 12 crore. We have the required infrastructure," Mann said.
