Arunachal Pradesh, one of the seven sisters of North-East, has asked the Centre to be "liberal" and not consider profitability in the construction of the proposed greenfield airport project in Itanagar. It has asked the Centre to accord priority to the airport project, which when completed will be the state's maiden civilian airport.

Terming the airport project as an "immense emotional and sentimental value for Arunachalees", chief minister Dorjee Khandu said, "Such projects should not be guided by cost-benefit analysis and should be supported more liberally by the central government." The project has already been delayed by more than two years for which 'in-principle' approval was given by the Union civil aviation ministry in September 2009.

Khandu lamented that despite Arunachal Pradesh did not have any airport. Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are the only two states that presently do not have any airport.
