"The state government's thrust on employment has yielded good dividends with Assam occupying the second position in terms of percentage growth in employment among the top 10 states and inion territories," said Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
As per the provisional results of Sixth Economic Census, Assam had a growth in employment at 78.84 per cent among the top 10 states and union territories as against the national average of 34.35 per cent. Rural Assam accounts for 85.55 per cent growth in employment while urban 65.11 per cent. Manipur at 83.29 per cent tops the list followed by Assam, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Assam also occupies the third place in terms of percentage growth in number of establishments among the top 10 states and union territories at 100.17 per cent behind Manipur (109.37 per cent) and Sikkim (102.92 per cent). The national average is 41.73 per cent.
Attributing the percentage growth in employment to the government's thrust on job creation, Gogoi said, "Assam despite various problems has been able to do well on the employment growth front. This augurs well for the state."The Chief Minister said that besides development activities, particularly backward areas, employment generation would continue to be the thrust area for the Government in the days ahead.
