Paying homage to victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Australian Defence Minister John Faulkner today said such strikes were a reminder that the risk of terrorism continued and ongoing vigilance was needed.

Acknowledging the bravery and sacrifice of all those who risked their life to save others, Faulkner said, "In difficult conditions Indian security forces battled bravely and successfully to rescue hundreds of innocent people who were caught up in the attacks."

The AAP quoted him as telling the Senate: "Across the Indian Ocean, of course, Australia was deeply shocked and appalled by the deadly and horrific attacks. Today as we remember the victims we need to remind ourselves that the threat of international terrorism continues. We must remain vigilant and work together to defeat terrorism in all its forms."

Senate Opposition leader Nick Minchin said this was indeed an horrific event.

"We join with Senator Faulkner in acknowledging and remembering those killed and wounded in this dreadful event," he said.

Australian Greens leader Bob Brown said the attack showed the vulnerability of some of those manipulated to participate.

"One can't go through the detail of that event without feeling abhorrence at the bastardy of those who manipulated that terrorism act from a distance," he said, adding "it was a cowardly act that kept them safe while they sent other pawns to kill, maim and destroy the lives of the innocent."
