A team of two researchers — an ayurvedic physician and a retired senior scientist of the Central Food Technological Research Institute — have discovered some beneficial properties of cow urine after about 18 months of research in a private analytical laboratory in Mysore. Meanwhile, a homeopathy practitioner, has claimed that it could help cure the influence caused by H1N1 virus too.

After analyses of samples, ayurvedic practitioner Sethu Madhva Sameera and senior CFTRI scientist late Srinivasamurthy, have found properties like essential oils, antioxidant principles and protein, sulphur compounds, urea, potassium carbonate, sodium, ammonium compound, beneficial for human body with curative benefits. They have also found polyphenols.

A private outfit in Mysore, established by the then Maharaja in the ‘30s for sheltering aged cows and domestic animals and now with over 200 aged cows at the foot of Chamundi Hills, entrusted laboratory-based analytical research of cow urine and cow-urine powder to assess its properties to scientists.

Making claims of curative properties of cow urine, a consultant analyst of ayurvedic medicines, told reporters today that the powder, prepared in the traditional way, was found to have ammonium carbonate, some essential oils and polyphenols.

Further analysis for antioxidants by using ferric chloride revealed that the antioxidant principles in cow urine had preventive and curative benefits. An analysis of non-cultured cow urine was found to have chemical properties like protein, sulphur compounds, urea, potassium carbonate, sodium, ammonium compound and polyphenols, he claimed.

Contents being natural, they have benefitted patients for whom the test dosages were given, said another Ayurvedic practitioner A S Chandrasekhar.
