M K Azhagiri, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who won this Lok Sabha seat by over 1.40 lakh today, is unhappy because his margin of victory fell short of his prediction of three lakhs and blamed the Election Commission for it.
The polling process was slow, many had to return without voting. The Election Commission had also rejected applications of 90,000 people for enrolling in the voters list, which he said contributed to the lower victory margin.
Many voters who had Electors Photo Identity Cards could not vote in the election as they were denied permission to exercise their franchise, he alleged talking to reporters.
Azhagiri, who was credited with steering the party to success in three byelections in the district since the DMK came back to power in the state in 2006, dedicated his victory "to the people of Madurai and his father Karunanidhi.
"The victory also indicated that the welfare projects and development works of the DMK Government have reached the poor people in the state," he said. He assured to provide all the basic amenities for the Madurai people and make the Madurai Airport an international one.
