The proceedings of the Bharatiya Janata Party's national executive here were decidedly tame compared with the drama that unfolded just outside the venue of the meeting. Former BJP chief Bangaru Laxman fired the first salvo by saying the party leadership could do with some changes.

Speaking outside the hotel where the national executive was being held, he said, "A feeling is gaining ground that co-operation of important people is not being received. In the prevailing circumstances, we need a leadership which will take everyone along and receive everyone's co-operation."

Laxman was not the only one to grab attention. Senior leader Murli Manohar Joshi's arrival in Chennai, accompanying RSS Sarsanghchalak K Sudershan, created a flutter. Joshi did not say much on record but the company he was keeping was more than enough to create ripples at the meet.

A fiery senior leader also created a flutter when he said Advani should consider giving up one of the two posts he was holding and that new leaves always take the place of old ones after Autumn.

BJP Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu later clarified that no such demand had been made and no such subject had come up for discussion at the meet.

That apart, the late arrival of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee ensured that a meeting of general secretaries was held before Advani's address. "We anticipate that not only do we need to prepare for polls in Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Assam, but also in Karnataka," said Naidu.

The economic resolution of the national executive was up for discussion later in the day. According to sources, the resolution will focus on agriculture, bio-fuel and the recent price rise. It will also raise the issue of derailment of the reforms process, especially the role of the Left parties in the entire scheme of things.

"There will be a reference to the slowdown in the reforms process and the harm to the economy being done because of this," said the source.

Among other topics to be taken up are disinvestment and the rising cost of living due to a hike in fuel prices.
