Banks have been able to meet only 47 per cent of the total credit target of Rs 2,525 crore being disbursed in 2002-2003.

The SGSY came into effect from April 1, 1999, after review and restructuring of anti-poverty programmes.

Rural development minister Kanshiram Rana and state for finance Anandrao Adsul met public sector bank chiefs and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) deputy governor, Vepa Kamesam today to discuss the progress of the scheme. A objective of the Yojana is to bring every assisted family above the poverty line in three years.

The ministers called upon state governments to provide their share of funds for rural development programmes under the SGSY on time and also asked banks to step up their focus on self-help groups and social mobilisation and capacity building of those below the poverty line.
