BARG's meet on nuclear desalination systems

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARG), India, as a member of International Nuclear Desalination Advisory, is organising a four-day International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) technical meeting on 'Integrated Nuclear desalination systems' from December 13 in Chenna.

Desalination experts from member states such as Argentina, China, Egypt, France, Indonesia, Israel, Russia, Saudi Arabia, UAE and IAEA will hold discussions on the recent global advancements in the field.

BARC has been participating in co-ordinated research projects (CRPs) of IAEA and is sharing the expertise with other member states in different aspects of nuclear desalination.

Nuclear and desalination plants are seen as co-generation projects. The vision is that every nuclear plant should produce hydrogen gas, electricity and deslaination water for meeting the future challenges.

As a part of national programme, to improve the quality of life in society by systematic induction of nuclear energy, BARC has developed desalination and water purification technologies on reverse osmosis, multi stage flash, low temperature evaporation, hybrid system, domestic water purification system and waste water reuse.

In the field of thermal desalination efforts are directed towards utilising the low-grade heat and the waste heat as energy input for desalination.
