West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu has cautioned that withdrawal of support to the United Front (UF) government by the Congress could spell a dangerous trend if it had been prompted by personal dislikes.
Holding the Congress responsible for creating political turbulence, Basu asked, could a party behave in such an irresponsible manner regarding formation of government at the Centre?
Stating that the UF government under H D Deve Gowda had functioned well, the veteran Marxist leader questioned the need for the party to withdraw support when it restored it.

In an interview with the CPI (M)mouthpiece Ganashakti here, he said a positive feeling was growing among the people that a coalition government could also work. But the Congress had hampered that process.
Basu stated that the Congress, which could not explain why it withdrew support, said that Deve Gowda did not give the party proper respect. If that was their feeling, they should have said it earlier. Views could have been exchanged by forming a committee as it was being done under the present UF government, he said.
On the change of UF leadership, Basu said, We supported the change for the Fronts unity. The political significance of the Front was immense under the present situation. It has the potential of emerging as even bigger force.
On expectation from the new government, Basu said that the present government should not compromise policies on which the front was based.
