Bengal Aerotropolis airport gets nod

Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd (BAPL) has received clearance from the civil aviation and defence ministries for setting up a greenfield airport at Machhiwara in Ludhiana.

This would be the third international airport in Punjab after Amritsar and Mohali, and the second to come up within a span of just 14 months.

The project would be spread across 3,500 acres of which 2,500 acres would be developed in the first phase.

Raj Shekhar Agrawal, director of BAPL, said, “We will now proceed with the techno economic feasibility report, which is expected to complete in the next four to six months.”

The company would invest around Rs 2,000 crore in the first phase, which includes land acquisition and construction of the airport, he added.
