The West Bengal government has firmed up plans of setting up renewable energy power plants of cumulative capacity of 100 MW with private participation at an investment of Rs 450 crore by 2007.

It has also targeted supply of green power to five lakh families covering 2000 villages by 2012 at an investment of Rs 3,000 crore.

The government is also exploring the possibility of setting up rice-husk based power plants in Bardhaman, Hoogly, Birbhum and Bankura districts.

The potential is around 150 MW and the government has already received expression of interest for 60 MW in the region.

"We have received 26 expressions of interest for the 100MW capacity green power plants that the state plans to set up in collaboration with the private sector," said Mrinal Banerjee, power minister of West Bengal, at the sidelines of a three-day workshop on 'Renewable energy for the future "" The way forward', organised by the India-Canada Environment Facility.

If the units come up, there would be around Rs 300 crore of investment from the private sector into the segment by 2006-07.

The state has requested all government departments, non-government organisations, and research and development facilities to gear up their activities so that rural Indian can use more green power. This will achieve the dual target of achieving rural electrification as well as reducing pollution through lower emission of carbon compounds.

The state government has also helped set up a 3.6 MW tidal power plant in the Sunderbans and a solar power plant at the New Township area in Rajarhat.

"The government is slated to spend around Rs 232 crore by 2006-07 with the rest likely to be from the private sector," informed Banerjee.
