The Congress today suffered a jolt in its bid for wresting power from the Sikkim Democratic Front led by Pawan Kumar Chamling after its state unit President Nar Bahadur Bhandari lost to SDF rival Am Prasad Sharma by 1266 votes from Khamdong-Singtam assembly constituency.

Sharma polled 4298 votes against Bhandari's 3032. The Sikkim Gorkha Prajatantrik Party (SGPP) candidate Arun Pradhan stood a poor third with 295 votes.

The door to his entry in the state legislature is still not closed for Bhandari, however, as he had contested from Soreng-Chakung assembly constituency as well where the counting of votes was yet to begin.
