While the ninth unit will be commissioned in 26 months, the entire project will be completed in 29 months. After completion of the project, the installed capacity of the plant will increase to 1,200 Mw, making it the Asia's largest captive power plant.

This is the largest-value single order bagged by BHEL for a captive power plant. The order involves manufacturing, supplying, erecting and commissioning of two steam turbine generator (STG) sets of 120 Mw each with matching pulverized fuel fired boilers.

BHEL will also deliver generator transformers, associated auxiliaries and unified controls and instrumentation system. BHEL has been given the civil and structural work.

Once set up, the ninth and tenth units of Nalco will increase the plant's present aluminium smelting capacity of 3.5 lakh tonnes per annum to 4.6 lakh tonnes per annum.

The steam turbine generators will be manufactured at BHEL's Hyderabad plant.

The boiler and generator transformers will be manufactured at the company's Trichy and Jhansi plants, respectively.

BHEL's Ranipet plant will supply boiler auxiliaries while the company's electronics division will set up the controls and instrumentation system. The control system for the two units of NALCO will be on a unified platform for the first time, says a release.
