The financial bids for the two ultra mega power projects at Sasan (Madhya Pradesh) and Mundra (Gujarat) will be opened today. |
The big question being asked is who will get to construct India's largest power plants of 4,000 Mw each. In the fray are Tata Power, L&T, Reliance Energy, Essar Power and Sterlite Industries, which have bid for both the projects. |
The other bidders for Sasan are NTPC, Torrent Power, Jindal Steel & Power, Jaiprakash Associates and Lanco (with British partner Globeleq), while for Mundra, it is Adani Enterprises. |
The bid evaluation will throw up two winning bids from the 16 received for the two projects -- 10 for the Sasan project, which will be based on pithead coal, and 6 for the Mundra project, which will be based on imported coal. The investment per project will be in the range of Rs 16,000-20,000 crore. |
The per unit tariff will be "below Rs 1.60 per unit for Sasan and substantially below Rs 1.75 per unit for Mundra," Power Secretary RV Shahi said, hours before the opening of the bids. |
While there is a 14-month limit for financial closure and commencement of construction, Shahi said he expected these timelines to be superseded, since it would be in the interest of the developer to move fast. "I expect the financial closure and the commencement of construction in six months," he said. |
Meanwhile, progress on environmental clearances, water linkages, transmission infrastructure and land acquisition for the two projects is proceeding "absolutely on schedule. There are no issues anywhere", according to officials associated with the projects. |
