As the overall flood situation in Bihar registered significant improvement with the water level all major rivers flowing below the danger mark, Bihar government today lauched distribution of money for relief and succour on a war footing.

The water level of Kosi, Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Gandak, Mahananda and Bagmati were maintaining receding trend and was flowing below the danger mark along their course in Bihar, Central Water Commission sources said.

State Disaster Management department's Additional Secretary Pratyay Amrit said the distribution of "relief- cum-succour" grants was taken up on a war footing under which each of the affected flood-hit families would be receiving one quintal foodgrain, besides Rs 2250 in cash, in the first phase.

Apart from this, utensils worth around Rs 250 per affected families were being supplied to the state-run relief camps from the CM Relief Fund.

So far, 27,484 quintal foodgrains and Rs 4.22 crore in cash, besides 2460 kits of utensils were supplied to the identified families who have taken shelters at camps, Amrit said.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has appealed to the people in camps not to return to their houses yet as Kosi has the tendency to inundate villages even in October.

The death toll in the current spell of floods stood at 217 in 18 districts, official sources said.
