The Cabinet is scheduled to meet shortly today to take a call on the much-awaited National Identification Authority of India Bill, 2010.
The bill will provide statutory status to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and a legal backing to the Aadhaar initiative as well.
This is a revised Bill, sent back by the Parliamentary Standing Committee headed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yashwant Sinha. It is expected be tabled during the winter session of Parliament.

The proposed legislation seeks to create a National Identification Authority of India, which will oversee the implementation of the Aadhaar project. It also seeks to define the penalties in case of misuse of the data collected under the UID project.
