THE BJP yesterday clarified that industrialist Nusli Wadia spoke to party president LK Advani on behalf of the Tatas and that Advani mentioned the matter to Assam Governor Lt Gen (Retd.) SK Sinha.

Nusli Wadia spoke to Advani and gave him the Tatas version of the developments. The essence of his conversation was that whatever Tatas have been doing in Assam was on the advice of the Central governments intellignece bureau, a party spokesperson stated.

Advani had occasion to mention this to the Assam Governor. The Governors views were somewhat different, she added. The BJPs clarifications have come five days after the pubication of a report which alleged that Wadia tried to use Advanis political clout to bail out the Tatas in Assam.

The Tatas have been accused of funding terrorists in Assam. Party office-bearers had so far refused to comment on the portion of the transcripts in which Wadia says he lobbied with Advani over the telephone for 25 minutes.
