A crucial meeting of the ruling BJP was held here today to elect the new chief minister for Uttarakhand following party's debacle in the state where it lost all the five parliamentary seats to the Congress in the recent elections.

Two days ago Chief Minister B C Khanduri, who was told to quit the post by the BJP leadership, made a statement here, saying he owns the moral responsibility for the poor show in the Lok Sabha elections.

Two central party observers — Thavar Chand Gehlot and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi- were also present in the meeting to take view of the party leaders and MLAs about their choice for the chief minister, the party sources said here.

Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, who led BJP to victory in 2007 assembly elections, is being seen as the front runner for the top job, the sources said.
