Equities across major bourses paused for a breather yesterday even as software stocks led by Satyam Computer and Pentafour Software and NIIT witnessed some hectic buying.
The weakening trend overall was attributed to profit booking by institutions along with a corresponding slow down in FII purchases. The BSE Sensex failed to cross the psychological 4,200 mark during intra-day trading and breached the crucial 4,100 mark to close at 4,079.45, a loss of 45.13 points or 1.07 per cent. The S&P CNX Nifty closed at 1,166.90, down 13.35 points. Foreign funds remained net buyers to the tune of Rs 57 crore on Wednesday which took the FII investments in May to Rs 1,508.2 crore.
Traded turnover on the BSE stood at Rs 1,958.63 crore while at the NSE it was Rs 2,846.65 crore. Among mid-cap indices, the BSE-100 slipped by 17.85
