The BJP will use its entire parliamentary arsenal, including a no-confidence motion, to throw out the United Front government, party vice-president KL Sharma said yesterday.

However, he clarified that the party would move a no-confidence motion only when it was sure of defeating the government on the floor of the Lok Sabha.

When pointed out that this could even mean a secure future for the Gowda government until the next session - in case the motion is defeated, as no confidence can be moved only once in a session, Sharma said: If we bring the no-confidence motion, it will be to nail the government and not to bail it out. The BJP will decide on the motion after seeing the mood in other political parties, particlarly the Congress, which has declared to give issue-based support to the government.

The BJPs parliamentary party executive is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to decide the partys parliamentary strategy. The partys parliemantary board would meet on Thursday before commencement of the budget session. The BJP is identifying the issues on which the Congress has opposed the UF government. The party would put the Congress to test by raising such issues and asking the party to vote against the government, Sharma said.

However, he said that despite the sabre ratling, the Congress is unlikely to vote against the government. The Congress new plank of issue-based support is both tactics and war of nerves.

Congress leaders want to use the new plank as a lever to pressurise Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda to prevent the CBI from proceeding further in the Bofors guns deal, he said. The Congress is threatening the government that the party can take any step in case the CBI went ahead in the Bofros case, Sharma said.

Sharma clarified that the BJP would raise the Bofors issue in Parliament in order to expose both the Congress and the government. The BJP would also raise the issues of electoral reforms, Lok Pal bill and the Women reservation bill, besides highlighting the problems in the North-Eastern states, particularly Tripura, he added.
