The BJP government in Karnataka today faced embarrassing moments in the Assembly when some of its members came down on the working of ‘Nemmadi Kendras’, the centres that provide various services to people, and demanded their closure.
“Nemmadi Kendras have disturbed our peace. They are not working properly. People are put to severe hardship. It is better to close them down”, Appacchu Ranjan and M P Kumaraswamy (both BJP) claimed during Question hour. Minister for Public Works C M Udasi, who replied to the question, initially rejected the accusation and said these centres were functioning well and performing the task of providing 41 services including issuing of land records, caste certificates among others.
“We don’t have nemmadi (peace) from Nemmadi Kendras. The minister is tendering evasive replies. What he says is not true,” Kumaraswamy retorted at Udasi, at the remark of which several opposition members rose in support of the ruling party member. Efforts by government Chief Whip D N Jeevaraj to stop Kumaraswamy from attacking the government failed as the member went on venting his anger over the working of the centres.
“Nemmadi Kendras have also destroyed the peace of mind of people as they had to visit them innumerable times for a certificate,” Ranjan, who has identified himself among the ranks of BJP dissidents, said.
