Slamming the hike in petrol and diesel prices as an "anti-people" move, the Bharatiya Janata Party today threatened a country-wide agitation against it.

"The Communists and the Congress have betrayed the common man. The hike will have a cascading effect on the prices of all essential commodities," BJP Parliamentary Party Spokesman V K Malhotra said.

Maintaining that the common man was already reeling under the impact of spiralling prices, he said the hike in fuel prices would further burden the "aam aadmi" on whose name the UPA government rose to power.

"It is an anti-people act," he said, adding that details of the country-wide agitation would be announced tomorrow.

In a statement from Bhubaneswar, party President Rajnath Singh said the UPA government's policies were affecting the common man and the party would oppose the move.
