Conceding to its coalition partner Janata Dal - Secular's (JD-S) demand, the Karnataka government, on Friday, decided to review the controversial Rs 2,250 crore Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project to find out whether irregularities had taken place. |
The state cabinet at its meeting here decided to set up a committee under the chairmanship of public works and energy department advisor K C Reddy and fixed a month's deadline to submit its findings on the project over which former Prime Minister and JD-S supremo H D Deve Gowda kicked up a row charging that it had been converted into a "real estate" project. |
Reacting to the decision, NICE managing director Ashok Kheny said: "We were given to understand that the government has proposed to form a review committee to review the project. The appointment of any committee other than the empowered committee to review the progress of the project will become a governmental force majeure and will be a default of the agreement by the government." |
He further added that this decision by the government to review is an unfortunate one and will result in governmental default and the same should be reconsidered. |
This is the first major review being undertaken by the Congress-JD-S coalition government of the decisions taken by the previous Congress regime headed by S M Krishna. |
Giving details of the cabinet decision, minister for revenue M P Prakash told reporters that the Reddy Committee will go into issues like, if excess land was acquired from farmers, violation in framework agreement and alignment of roads and securing of bank loan mortgaging the allotted land by the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE), which has been entrusted with the work. |
The decision to appoint a committee to review the project stemmed from an promise by chief minister N Dharam Singh, Prakash said. |
The peripheral roads, road designs and township projects proposed by NICE would also come under the scanner, he said, indicating a comprehensive review of the project, while asserting that it would not be shelved. |
