The inter-ministerial Board of Approval for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) today formally cleared 26 proposals and gave in-principle clearance to another six.

The board deferred a decision on seven proposals, of which three "" DLF's infotech SEZ, Falcon and Perfect "" are for Uttar Pradesh where the new state government is reviewing all SEZ proposals.

Among the major zones to receive formal approval, which is the last stage before an SEZ is notified, is Reliance Industries's 440-hectare multi-service zone at Gurgaon, Haryana. With this, RIL has received formal clearance for two of the five SEZs it proposes to set up.

The 2,850-hectare Rewas Ports Ltd zone, in which companies owned by RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani and close associate Anil Jain have a 51 per cent stake, was given in-principle approval, the second-last stage in the approval process.

A commerce ministry official said the Rewas SEZ would be considered for formal approval as soon it gets possession of land.

"The Rewas zone is significant because that is where the Delhi-Mumbai industry corridor will terminate," the official said.

Around 200 freight trains are expected to ply through the railway corridor between Dadri and Rewas.

Another significant zone approved formally is GMR Infrastructure's 101-hectare SEZ, which will be linked to the airport that the company is constructing in Hyderabad.

The board also formally cleared VGTM Urban Development Authority's 16-hectare infotech services based zone at Guntur, the first SEZ to be developed by a municipal body.

In-principle clearances "" given to SEZs that have not acquired land "" were given to Gitanjali Gems's two zones at Nanded and Nashik, PSL Ltd's 105-hectare zone at Amreli, Gujarat, dedicated to alternative energy and DLF's textile-based 100-hectare zone at Dankuni in West Bengal.
