The addiction for hydrocarbon is only going to increase in the coming years globally despite the increase in oil prices and it is important for academic institutes like IITs to take advantage of the premium opportunities to produce large number of employable talented manpower in the field, Srinivasan said after inaugurating the British Gas Petroleum Geosciences Research Laboratory at IIT Bombay.

The multi-billion exlporatory industry is looking for talents who can provide them reliable data and even good drillers (who are in shortage) and IITs and other institutions can take advantage of Industry-academic partnership to achieve this, he said.

In 2006, BG India and IIT Bombay signed a sponsorship agreement as part of BG Group's social investment programme to establish a new M-Tech course in Petroleum Geosciences.

Under the terms of the agreement, BG agreed to sponsor the project over a five year period.
