BSES seeks police cover, tribunals

Under seige from Delhi power consumers, Anil Ambani-controlled BSES today asked the Sheila Dikshit government to provide special courts and adequate police protection to check power theft, saying this could help contain tariff hike in future.

Asserting the BSES had held several interactions with the Delhi government seeking security cover in their effort to check pilferage, the BSES Chief J P Chalsani said the utility had encountered problems in this regard and this had resulted in huge distribution losses.

"The biggest problem we are facing is of power theft in Delhi. Our distribution losses are still high despite having met the stipulations provided by the Delhi Electricity Regulation Commission.

"We have failed to check the menace as we did not get the security cover and facility of special courts as promised," the BSES chief said.

On the issue of higher bills to consumers, Chalsani said random checks had not revealed any fault in meters and it was general "perception" in people's mind which needs to be addressed.

"However, we are not keeping quiet. We have launched an intensive drive against such complaints and have decided to process audit to monitor the translation of meter readings to actual bills," Chalsani asserted.
