Cabinet To Discuss Competition Bill, Mrtp Act Repeal Today

The Union Cabinet, which is scheduled to meet here on Tuesday, is to take up the Competition Bill and the repeal of the MRTP Act before introduction in the forthcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

The Cabinet will also consider a proposal to provide an additional assistance of over Rs 250 crore for the construction of dwellings for people living below the poverty line in the earthquake-affected areas of Gujarat.

Also, on the agenda are restructuring proposals for Central Inland Water Transport Corporation (CIWTC) and the six mills of National Jute Manufacturing Corporation (NJMC).

The Cabinet is also slated to take up a proposal for the acquisition of 26 per cent stake by public sector undertaking Andrew Yule & Company in Desson Consultants and Investment Ltd for a consideration of Rs 17.37 lakh.

The Cabinet is also expected to clear the policy for the prevention and control of HIV and AIDS. Another proposal pertains to the switch-over to 50 kg packaging bags for foodgrains by Food Corporation of India and other state procuring agencies which are based on recommendations of the International Labour Organisation.

As per the restructuring plan for NJMC, prepared by the textile ministry, before submitting it to the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction the government will offer the six mills for sale to workers
