CAT asks CBDT to consider Narender Singh as Chairman

Central Administrative Tribunal is understood to have asked the government to consider Narender Singh, a member of Central Board of Direct Taxes who was overlooked in terms of seniority for the post of chairman of the board in favour of S S N Moorthy.

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) passed an order yesterday asking the government to consider him for the post of CBDT Chairman with retrospective effect.

The government has asked the CBDT  to constitute a new committee of secretaries to consider Singh for the post of Member and Chairman for the year 2008-09. CAT order has to be implemented within 3 months, finance ministry sources said.

However, Singh is due for retirement on May 31, 2010. Singh, on assuming the post will replace S S N Moorthy, the current chairman.

Narender Singh, a 1972-batch IRS officer, was appointed a member of the board this year. Earlier he was Director General Exemption in the Tax Department.
