Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said there is scope for improvement in the functioning of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The agency should act without fear and bring to book all those who are guilty, irrespective of their position or status, the PM said after inaugurating the new CBI headquarters. “CBI must avoid harassment to those who act in good faith in the discharge of their duties,” Singh added.

On the setting up of special CBI courts across states, the PM asked the minister of state for personnel V Narayanaswamy to pursue the matter. The government has decided to set up 71 additional special courts, of which 64 have been sanctioned but only 16 are operational.

CBI has a difficult task to perform and it is essential that it has the necessary technical and other resources required for its work, the PM said.

Home Minister P Chidambaram, Law Minister Veerappa Moily and Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal were also present on the occasion.
