The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is tightening noose around the Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. |
In the final phase of investigations into the disproportionate assets case against former UP chief minister, the CBI has sought details of assets declared by Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1977, when he was minister for cooperatives and animal husbandry. |
The agency has approached the state assembly for a certified copy of the assets declared by Yadav in 1977, which was published in UP gazette notification on March 3, 1978. |
Principal Secretary (Assembly) R P Pandey confirmed here today that the CBI has sought certified copy of the assets declared by Yadav when he was an MLA and later became cooperative minister. |
Under the provisions of UP Ministers and Legislators (Publication of Assets and Liabilities) Act 1975, it is mandatory for every member of the assembly to file his/her assets before the secretary assembly every year. |
"The letter was sent by the CBI on July 7 and the details are being dispatched by the assembly secretariat today," he said. |
A public interest litigation (PIL) has alleged that Yadav has amassed assets worth Rs 10 crore. Yadav, in his affidavit filed during the recently held assembly polls, had claimed asset worth about Rs 2.5 crore. |
According to the notification published on March 3, 1978, the declared assets of the former CM in 1977 were only Rs 42,955. This included 2.53 acres of agriculture land and a house in Saifai, Rs 9355.20 cash at Central Bank of India, Karhal branch and Rs 3,100 cash at a UP Cooperative Bank in Lucknow. |
The SP leader also had one Willy jeep worth Rs 10,000 and a Bajaj scooter worth Rs 4,000, three life insurance policies with annual premium of Rs 210, Rs 105 and Rs 710 annually for the policies of Rs 3000, Rs 3000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. |

This included 14.63 acres of agricultural land in Saifai and over Rs 36 lakh in 8 bank accounts and one plot in Etawah worth Rs 56, 000 and a house in same district at Civil lines worth Rs 33 lakh. |

The Supreme Court, on March 1 last had ordered the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the charges against Mulayam Singh on disproportionate assets. The apex court order came in response to a PIL filed by Vishwanath Chaturvedi, a Congress leader and a trade union activist, alleging Yadav and his family members had amassed millions of rupees by corrupt means. The PIL petition was filed in December 2005. |
The principal argument in it was that Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family members had amassed wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income. According to the petition, the family owned property worth more than Rs 10 crore. It even enclosed copies of the sale deeds of the properties acquired by Yadav, his two sons and daughter-in-law over the years. |
The PIL petition also pointed out that Mulayam declared a taxable income of only Rs 79, 000 in 1977. The list of properties runs into nine pages and the documents relating to them take up approximately 1,000 pages. |
