Central team in U'khand to assess damage

With Uttarakhand seeking Rs 22,000-crore package, a Central team today arrived in the hill state to assess the extent of damage caused by heavy rains.

Responding quickly to the urgent call from the state government, the 10-member team would visit all the 13 districts with the state government asking all the district magistrates to provide all possible assistance to them, an official spokesman said.

After meeting with top officials and Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on October 2, the team would return to New Delhi to submit the report to the Centre.

According to an assessment made by the state government, there are nearly 100 to 200 villages which are unsafe for living in the state after the devastation

The torrential rains, the worst in several decades, battered Uttarakhand leaving a big trail of death and destruction. Though a total of 200 people were killed during this monsoon season, there are thousands others who were rendered homeless.
