The Centre has removed a major hurdle in the Delhi-Gurgaon metro project by allowing the DLF group to run the proposed Jehangir Puri-HUDA city centre stretch through the realty major's Special Economic Zone.

The clearance was given by the Board of Approval (BoA) for SEZs in the Commerce Ministry at its meeting on June 19.

"After deliberations, the BoA granted permission to DLF to allow passage of the proposed metro corridor through Cyber City SEZ in Gurgaon," a senior Commerce Ministry official said.

The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) along with a consortium of ITNL ENSO Rail Systems, IL&FS Transportation Networks (India) and DLF are building a metro corridor from Sikanderpur to National Highway No 8.

The corridor will connect Gurgaon to Delhi Metro's Gurgaon route connecting Jehangir Puri (Delhi) and HUDA city centre (Gurgaon).

DLF stated in its presentation to the BoA that the cost of constructing the piers would be completely borne by the consortium and no benefits under the SEZ policy would be availed.

The Gurgaon metro project is scheduled to be completed by January 2010.
