Centre clears Rs 50 cr grant for gem park

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 50 crore as grant for cluster development in the Gem and Jewellery Park at Ichhapore in Surat. The grant will be paid under the Industrial Infrastructural Upgradation Scheme (IIUS), to Gujarat Hira Bourse (GHB), which is developing the project.
 
"Gujarat Hira Bourse will spend Rs 85 crore for cluster development in the jewellery park. The Centre will give a grant of Rs 50 crore, while Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) will give a grant of Rs 15 crore. GHB will contribute Rs 10 crore, while the remaining 10 crore would be raised from other sources," a GHB member told Business Standard, requesting anonymity.
 
"This money would be utilised for developing world-class infrastructure in the jewellery park. It would also be used for developing a training centre, trading centre, R & D centre, exhibition hall and a convention centre in the park."
 
"Our aim is to make the Ichhapore jewellery park the very best in the country. We are confident that with help from the government, we would be able achieve that goal," he said.
 
"The concept of cluster development would prove highly beneficial, and enable the gem and jewellery industry of Surat, reach new heights," he added.
 
"Some prominent diamond businessmen of Surat, had visited Delhi just before Diwali, and held a meeting with representatives of Planning Commission, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Industries, and other concerned departments. The meeting was very successful, and has resulted in the central government agreeing to pay the grant," another GHB member said.
 
"We are all the more pleased by the outcome of the meeting, as Rs 50 crore is the maximum grant the central government gives for any project under the Industrial Infrastructural Upgradation Scheme," he said.
 
"The Gem and Jewellery Park will be spread over an area of 10 lakh square metres which GHB has acquired from GIDC for Rs 22.50 crore. The park would comprise approximately 400 units, and generate thousands of employment opportunities.
 
"On completion, which we expect to by done within one-and-a-half to two years, the park will give a major thrust to the diamond and jewellery industry of Surat," he informed.
