The Union government will adopt various strategies including policy interventions to mitigate problems faced by the jute industry as well as to promote the sector in the long term, Union Textile Secretary Rashmi Verma said here on Tuesday.
Addressing media persons after a meeting chaired by Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani here to take feedback about the problems faced by the workers, mill-owners and other stakeholders of the jute industry, she said: "The government is committed towards mitigating the problems faced by the various stakeholders as well as promote the sector in the long run. Policy interventions both in the short and long term will be taken."
Verma also said a roadmap for welfare of jute industry has been adopted and brain-storming sessions will be held in the future for redressing issues faced by the various stakeholders.
Among the various issues raised in the meeting were "intense competition and cheap Bangladeshi import" and delayed payments to farmers.
